Time Management Techniques for Salespeople

In 1928, the magazine Sales and Marketing Management surveyed Businesses to determine how efficiently salespeople were using their time. They discovered that the average salesperson was only working 20 percent of the time, approximately one and one-half hours per day. This finding caused bells to go off throughout the sales industry. The idea that salespeople were only working ninety minutes per day became the emphasis for improved training, better time management skills, better supervision, and better control of the activities of salespeople.

Double Your Sales

In my sales programs, I teach what I call my minutes theory. It is based on a simple equation. If you are in sales today, 100 percent of your sales and your income are generated by the number of minutes hat you spend face-to-face with prospects and customers. If you want to increase the number of sales or the amount of money you make, you must increase the number of minutes that you spend in actual selling activity, face-to-face with people who can, and will, buy from you. My theory says that if you double the number of minutes that if you spend with customers, you will double your income, even if you do not improve in any other area of sales. If you manage your time as the top salespeople do, so that you are spending more time with customers, your sales will increase immediately.

The Job of the Salesperson

Let us begin with the job description of the salesperson. The job description of the salesperson is to create and keep customers. The measure of effectiveness of a salesperson is how many new customers she creates, or resales she generates, in any given time period. Everything else that salesperson does is secondary to creating and keeping customers. Therefore, the only time a sales person is working is when he is face-to-face, head-to-head, and knee-to-knee with a prospect or customer.

Begin with Clear Income and Sales Goals

Achieving Peak Performance and excellent time management in sales begins with your setting clear income and sales goals for yourself. The act of sitting down and deciding, in writing, how much you want to earn, and how you are going to go about earning it, makes it far more likely that you will achieve those goals than if you didn't set them at all. The goal-setting exercise I am about to share with you has led to the doubling and tripling of the incomes of many salespeople. It is powerful because it is simple and easy. You can learn it and apply it immediately.

Determine What You Will Have to Do

Once you have broken your income and sales goals down into monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly amounts, you then define these goals in terms of the activities necessary to achieve them. The critical element in this calculation is the factor of control. You cannot control your income or your sales on a day-to-day basis. They depend on too many other factors. But you can control your activities. You can determine and control what you do from morning to night, and as a result, you can indirectly control your income. If you engage in the activities necessary to make sales you want to make, you will inevitably achieve your sales goals.

Get Better at What You Do

Once you have determined your sales goals and worked out an activity schedule for each day, you immediately go to work on yourself to upgrade your skills in your key result areas. One of the best uses of your time is to get better at the most important things you do. Your goal is to upgrade your skills so that you achieve more and better results in a shorter period of time.

Still The Best Investment

In my many years in the financial services industry, the most frequent question I get is “what is the best investment” or “where is the best place to put your money?” These questions will illicit many answers that would largely depend on the preference of the ones giving the answers. If you ask these questions from a stock broker, his answer would be the stock market; someone in the real-estate industry would probably recommend a piece of land, a house or a condominium; an insurance agent would pitch for an investment linked life insurance policy; a banker would go for one or two of their trust products; and an entrepreneur will say going into business is still the best way to invest your money.

While I don’t argue that what I mentioned are great ways to create and grow your wealth, I would say that the best investment you can even make is by investing in yourself.

There are many ways one can invest in oneself and it all starts with education. Education remains to be the best way for us to achieve our aspirations in life. Developing and enhancing our skills can be achieved through proper education, both formal and informal ways. I find it absurd that there are those who foolishly claim that education is not necessary to be successful in life and they will state a couple of individuals who became successful despite the lack of proper education.

The experience of a few notable exceptions does not mean it becomes the rule of the game. The same notable exceptions would spend so much money in ensuring their children will get a good education, something they really put value to. Further, the said exceptions may not have received proper formal education but they received some other forms of education—through other people, circumstances and their situation.

However, I do not subscribe to the belief that quality education is synonymous to cost: the bigger the cost is, the better the education. We have seen countless stories of very victorious individuals who rose up the corporate ladder or established successful businesses without going through the “expensive” educational institution. Quality is a function of dedication-—of the educational institution, the student and the parent. The student can learn the theoretical knowledge from the schools and the practical understanding from the parent, which the student must be able to apply by himself.

Education is also not limited to the acquisition and retention of knowledge. The mark of a good education is in the learning of knowledge and the subscription to proper values. Formation of values is also a function of education— in the school, in the home and in the streets.

Let us invest in good education: one that makes us improve our skills and live our values so we can be what God created us to be, with Christ as our model.

Find a Need and Fill It

Human needs and wants are unlimited. Therefore, the opportunities for entrepreneurship and financial success are unlimited as well. The only constraint on the business opportunities available to you are the limits you place on your own imagination.

Find a Problem and Solve It

Wherever there is a widespread and unsolved customer problem, there is an opportunity for you to start and build a successful business.

Once upon a time, before photocopies, the only way to type multiple copies of a letter was with carbon paper places between sheets of stationary. But a single mistake would require the typist to go through and erase the mistakes on every single copy. This was enormously clumsy and time consuming.

Then a secretary working for small company in Minneapolis began mixing flour with nail varnish in order to white out the mistake she was making in her typing. Soon, people in other offices began asking for it. The demand became so great that she quit her job and began working full-time manufacturing what she called “Liquid Paper.” A few years later, the Gillette Corporation came along and bought her out for $47 million cash.

Unlimited Opportunities

There are problems everywhere. Your job is to find one of these problems and solve it better than it has been solved in the past. Find a problem that everyone has and see if you can't come up with a solution for it. Find a way to supply a product or service better, cheaper, faster, or easier. Use your imagination.

Focus on the Customer

The key to success in business is to focus on the customer. Become obsessed with your customer. Become fixated on your customer's wants, needs, and desires. Think of your customer all the time. Think of what your customer is willing to pay for. Think about your customer's problems. See yourself as if you were working for your customer.

Bootstrap Your Way to Success

Once you have come up with a problem or idea, resolve to invest your time, talent, and energy instead of your money to get started. Most great personal fortunes in the United States were started with an idea and with the sale of personal services.

Most great fortunes were started by people with no money, resources, or backing. They were started by individuals who came up with an idea and who then put their whole heart into producing a product or service that someone else would buy.

Action Exercise

Look for business opportunities everywhere, develop, an entrepreneurial mind-set, and continually be open and curious about the needs not satisfied and problems not solved. One idea is all you need to make your first million.

Money as a Motivator of Behavior

It has been said that, “Money may not be the most important thing, but it's way up there with oxygen.” The fastest and easiest way to get the things you want as quickly as possible is almost always to have enough money to be able to buy them, whatever they cost. For this reason, the desire to acquire money, quickly and easily, and as much as possible, is a major motivator of human behavior. But it is not usually money that people really want.

Freedom

Sometimes I will ask people why they want to acquire a lot of money. After thinking about their answer for a couple of minutes, they finally conclude that what they want more than anything else is “freedom.” In reality, they see money as a means to achieving the freedom they really desire. They define freedom as having enough money so they can get everything they want. Having enough money will enable them to be completely free from worry about safety, security, leisure, love, respect and fulfillment. They see having lots of money as the fastest way to a good life.

Ten Million Pesos

In our advanced coaching and mentoring programs, we do an exercise in values clarification. When everyone is seated, we hand out individual checks made out to each person in the amount of 10 million pesos. Of course, the checks are not cashable, but the idea of receiving 10 million pesos cash gives people an opportunity to fantasize about what they really want in their lives. We then have participants break into groups, discuss what they would do if they suddenly received P10 million, and then report back to the group. We go around the room and write down their answers on a white board or flip chart. Here is the most amazing discovery: almost everything that our clients would want to do, have, or acquire, does not cost any money!

The Lust for Power

The desire for power is one of the most destructive forces in the world today, and always has been. If the fastest and easiest way to get all the things you want is to have all the money you need, it then follows that the fastest and easiest way to get the money you need is to acquire power over people and resources, both in business and at the political level. Power can be defined as “the ability to control or influence money, people and resources.” It is the ability to force people to do what you want them to do, whether or not it is consistent with their own personal desires.

Money and Power Together

Money starts out as the motivation for an expedient person to fulfill his needs, for himself and his family. It can soon become an end in itself. Once a person has enough money so that he no longer worries about money, it becomes a form of measurement, a scorecard that he uses to compare himself against others. Megalomaniacs and dictators often become obsessed with power, to the exclusion of all other considerations. By the same token, many men in business become preoccupied with money, to the exclusion of other things, especially their families.

How Power is Acquired

There are different ways that power is acquired in our society. In business, power is acquired by getting results, by making decisions that lead to incremental gain in revenues and profits. The most powerful people in the business world are those with the best reputation for achieving financial goals in their areas of responsibility.

Sometimes the relative rank order of importance of a person is obvious. He or she might be better dressed, or wear more jewelry. In the financial world, hierarchy becomes clear in the way people speak or in the way that they are treated by others. It is important to carry yourself appropriately in order to be taken seriously in the finance world.

Seven Ways to Increase Sales Revenues

To grow any enterprise, you must continually seek ways to turbo charge it's engine. You must develop strategies that will drive sales to ever-higher levels while ensuring that your growth in revenues translates into higher cash flow and profits. Essentially there are seven ways to increase revenues. Mastering any one of the seven will produce significant results. Success in all seven will lead to dramatic growth.

Make More Sales

The first and perhaps most obvious way to increase revenues is simply to make more sales. Of course, one of the best ways to accomplish this objective is by expanding your customer base. If you own a restaurant, how can you attract more patrons? If your business supplies parts to OEM's, what strategy will allow you to sell to a greater number of manufacturers? If you run a print shop, what steps can you take to bring more customers in the door? What new strategies will allow you to attract more customers?

Sell More Often to Existing Customers

In addition to expanding your customer base, you can also make more sales by selling more often to the same customer. Customer acquisition costs can be enormous. Once you have developed a customer, look for ways to increase the number of times you sell to him in any given period. In addition to increasing your sales revenues, such sales will also be more profitable.

Sell Something Else

In addition to increasing the number of transactions per customer, you might also be able to sell the customer additional products. Increasing revenues from your existing customer base in this way is yet another example of capitalizing on your original customer acquisition cost. Ask yourself, “What else would someone who is purchasing my product or service be interested in buying?” The women buying a new pair of shoes might want to complete her wardrobe with a matching handbag. Does the opportunity exist for you to sell additional products to your existing customers?

Make More Profitable Sales

To this point, we have covered four ways to increase gross sales revenues. But what is of paramount importance to any business is cash flow and profits. In addition to achieving this end by increasing gross sales revenues, you can reach the same goal by improving sales margins—that is, by increasing net sales. Examine the profitability of each of your customers. Also, determine the profitability of each product—you will find that some are more profitable than others.

Reduce Your Selling Costs

We have already mentioned that an important consideration in gauging the financial health and the future prospects for any business is the cost of the customer acquisition. Do you know yours? Examine your sales processes. Do you sell directly or through independent distributors? If you pay commissions, are your commission rates optimal—that is, are they high enough to attract good salespeople and low enough to be practical? Do you support your sales force or your independent marketing collaterals, such as brochures, catalogs, and the like? Continually seek ways to increase your revenues, both gross and net. The prime determinant of your direction will be your ability to grow revenues and profits.

Attitude is Everything

The most important attitude for financial success is long-term thinking. Successful people think a long way into the future and they adjust their daily behaviors to assure they achieve their long-term goals. In a longitudinal study done at Harvard University in the 50s and 60s, they studied the reasons for upward socio-economic mobility. They were looking for factors that would predict whether or not an individual or family was going to move upward and be wealthier in the future than in the present.

They studied factors like education, intelligence, being born into the right family, or having the right connections. In every case, they found individuals who had been born with every blessing in life who did poorly. They also found individuals who had been born or come to this country with no advantages at all who had been extremely successful. What was the distinguishing factor?

They finally determined that there was only one key attitude that mattered. They called it "Time Perspective." Time perspective refers to the amount of time that you take into consideration when planning your day to day activities and when making important decisions in your life.

Time Perspective

People with long-time perspective invariably move up economically in the course of their lifetimes. When you spend weeks, months and years developing your skills and ability and expanding your experience in order to be successful, you have long-time perspective. The average professional person has a time perspective of 10, 15 and 20 years.

Begin to see that everything that you are doing today is part of a long-time continuum, at the end of which you are going to be financially independent or financially unfortunate. People with short-time perspective think only about fun and pleasure in the short term. They have what economists call "The inability to delay gratification." They have an irresistible tendency to spend every single penny they earn and everything that they can borrow.

When you develop long-time perspective, you develop the discipline to delay gratification and to save your money rather than spending it. The combination of long-time perspective and delayed gratification puts you onto the high road to financial independence.

Action Exercises

Now, here are three things you can do to develop the attitudes of financially successful people:

First, think long-term about your financial life. Decide exactly how much you want to be worth five years, ten years and twenty years from today. Write it down. Make a plan. Take action on your plan every single day.

Second, develop the ability to delay gratification. Instead of buying something on impulse, put off buying decisions for a day, a week or even a month. Decide in advance to "think it over" before you buy anything. This can change the way you spend money almost immediately.

Philippines Invites JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs to Invest in Ports, Railways

The Philippines is inviting foreign investors including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to help the nation build roads, ports and railways, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said.

“We’re talking to a lot of big names overseas, those with large amounts of capital and it’s a long list,” Purisima told reporters today in Manila. None of the companies have made any commitments yet, he said.

President Benigno Aquino’s government is planning to build 200 billion pesos ($4.5 billion) worth of infrastructure to achieve the fastest economic growth in three decades by 2011 while narrowing the budget deficit from a record 325 billion pesos. Ten of the public works projects are set to be outlined next month.

While the infrastructure program “will probably take Aquino’s entire term to complete,” the rhetoric around it benefits Philippine assets, said Radhika Rao, an economist at Forecast Pte in Singapore.

Aquino, who took office in June, will make his first foreign visit as president to the U.S. this month to court investors. The trip comes after $1 billion of peso bonds sold overseas for the first time drew bids for more than 13 times the amount on offer.

“When you look around the country, our infrastructure is really wanting, from airports to the roads to power,” Purisima said. Companies in the U.S. have a trillion dollars of investable assets, he said last month.

‘Engine of Investment’

Growth in the $160 billion economy has been driven by consumption and it is now important to “start the engine of investment,” Purisima said today.

The 30 percent gain in the Philippine Stock Exchange Index so far this year may help, Aquino said in a speech at the exchange today.

“The impressive performance of the capital market usually heralds the coming of more foreign direct investments,” Aquino said. “That is what I hope to achieve in my forthcoming trip to the United States.”

The stock index fell from a record, losing 0.1 percent to 3,968.29 at the close in Manila. Yields on Philippine benchmark four-year bonds fell last week to the lowest level since the debt started trading in 2009.

The peso has gained about 4.5 percent this year and was trading at 44.23 per dollar at 3:02 p.m. local time. It will advance 10 percent to 40 per dollar in the next 12 months, Barclays Plc said yesterday.

The Philippines plans to start offering public works projects to investors by the third week of October, Purisima said.

The nation has run budget deficits in 21 of the past 25 years, limiting government infrastructure spending to below the level of 5 percent of gross domestic product recommended by the World Bank.

Investors will focus more closely on the deficit next year to see how much progress the government is making on curbing it, Rao said. “They have to walk the talk,” she said.

Look within your own life and work, under your own feet, for your own "acres of diamonds." What qualities do you have that account for your greatest success in life so far? What personal skills and abilities have gotten you to where you are today? How could you apply those same skills and abilities to starting and building a new business?

Customer Need

Many fortunes begin when an individual sees a customer need that is not being satisfied and which their current company has no interest or desire in satisfying. Sometimes this idea comes as the result of customer inquiries or complaints. Often, the individual decides that he will start a new business, sometimes on the side, to give these customers what they are asking for. Sometimes there is a great business opportunity staring you in the face, right where you are today. What could it be?

What Can You Improve Upon?

Look for something that is an improvement on an existing product or service rather than something brand new. Look for something that is cheaper or of better quality. Look for something that has additional features or functions that current products don't offer. Look for something that is better in some way in comparison to something that people are already buying and using. Improving an existing successful product or service is the fastest and surest way to build a successful business. An idea only needs to be 10% newer and better to capture substantial market share.

What Can You Get Excited About?

Look for a product or service about which you can really become enthusiastic. Sometimes people become wealthy by translating or transforming their hobbies into a business. You will always be most successful doing something or marketing something that you really love and care about. Every product or service, and business, must have a champion.

For five out of six trading sessions over the last two weeks, the headlines talked about how the stock market had reached its highest level in three years. Then the market turned south and the headlines changed to “Market down on profit-taking.”

While the media are filled with people of good intentions and noble hearts, honestly, you are wasting your time trying to get any worthwhile analysis from those sources. The stock market seems like a simple affair to those outside of the business, and everyone thinks he is an expert on the market. What’s to know and learn about the stock market? It is just some rich people gambling on stocks. Or maybe the market is where people buy at the low and sell when they have made a lot of money or lost a lot of money.

To simplify the stock market either of those ways, is to describe what Manny Pacquiao does as two under-educated muscle men who can’t get a real job so they make money trying to beat each other up.

The better of the stock-market commentators may have even browsed the Internet to learn a little more. Then you read analysis that mentions fear and greed and things like that.

I will not bore you with what the stock market is really all about, since I have done that many times in the past. But let me take you through the psychology of investing that every investor will experience. Perhaps you have already.

You must understand that any time you make a purchase, there are a variety of factors that go into the decision-making process. Ever bought a car? All cars are basically the same in function. You did not walk into the dealership and say, “Here is my check for P1 million. Where is my car?”

I would imagine it probably takes you 20 minutes to buy a shirt or a pair of shoes. Lots of factors and lots of decisions because there are many emotions involved.

Investing in stocks is not about buying. It is about the holding on to your shares. And the emotions and related decisions.

When you buy the car or the shirt, the decisions are over. It is not like you are going to decide two months later that you do not like your shirt, and are going to take it back to Shoemart and say, “I bought this last month for P500, but I do not like it. Here; buy it back from me for P300.”

Likewise, you will not take the car back to the dealer and say, “Hey, everyone thinks this is a great car. I will sell it to you for 20 percent more than I paid for it.”

But that is what being a stock-market investor is like.

In this week’s issue of my Stock-Market Update, I wrote to subscribers that “Honestly, I do not like the market right now for the short term.” How in the world could I say that? Everyone knows how positive I am on the Philippines, the peso and the PSE?!

There are four emotions that the majority of investors will feel at some point (but not at the beginning) during a stock-market rally. These are optimism, excitement, thrill and euphoria (Look at how smart I am!). When we reach the point of euphoria, we have found the Point of Maximum Financial Risk. From there, prices will fall.

Going down, emotions are anxiety denial (“It’s OK. I am a long-term investor”), fear, desperation, panic, capitulation (“How could I have been so wrong?”), and despondency. Now, a stock-market rally will begin with prices going up at this Point of Maximum Financial Opportunity. This is where we were in November 2008.

Every investor knows exactly what he is feeling at any given time. It is deciding on what action makes sense, and then doing something that is the hard part. At the bottom of a market, how can you be feeling “despondency” and yet buy into the market? Most cannot do that. But note this: It is only the losers who held shares too long that are feeling despondent. The smart investors were out long before and are psychologically ready to get back in at the bottom, and that is why they make money and most people do not.

Losing investors always miss the bottom. But as soon as prices rise, they come back, feeling, in turn, depression as they miss the first wave up (November 2008 to May 2009). Then it is hope as they finally buy in, relief as their issues show some profit, and then back to optimism.

The psychology of investors that I have outlined is the big picture of price movement. However, it also applies on a shorter time scale.

On the list of emotions above, “euphoria” is felt at the time of a market high. That is accurate. Nevertheless, another emotion that is ignored by most people who analyze these things is apathy or complacency. During the course of a stock rally (which is what we have right now), investors reach a point when they do not feel any real concern for falling prices.

The market has gone up 15 of the last 18 months. Price have risen 34 of the past 52 weeks. It is easy to be indifferent and satisfied. And that is why I do not like the market for the short term.

If I am right and prices begin to fall, investors will start worrying a little. Remember that market-rally emotion of hope? Hope only comes out of worry and concern. We need a little more concern, which will then get investors to hope prices will go higher in the future, instead of just expecting that stocks will go up. Then prices will go up. And by the way, the market is not down on profit-taking. It is down on because of a lack of buyers feeling some anxiety.

Economic Courage

The weakest link in any organization is at the top. Every institution is only as strong and as effective as the leadership.

The leadership of the Philippines has lacked courage, or to use the vulgar Spanish term, cojones, for far too long. That is not to criticize any one person because, while courage is an individual characteristic, personal courage is just about worthless unless that quality is cascaded throughout an organization.

A courageous general cannot win battles unless that courage becomes a part of the policy and the mindset and behavior of everyone within the army. However, a courageous general has the obligation to get the troops to buy-in and become part of the general’s courageous thought and actions.

What is courage? The traditional dictionary definition goes something like this: “The quality of a confident character not to be easily afraid or intimidated. It is the ability to do things which one finds frightening.” American author Mark Twain wrote, “Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it.”

An important reason to revere and respect Dr. Jose Rizal was his courage. He took it directly, too, and put his grievances and ideas right in the face of the Spanish and the Church that supported the abuses of the Spanish colonizers. His courage inspired courage in dozens of other leaders and thousands of ordinary Filipinos.

Perhaps the best way for a leader to judge his or her courage is to look at the reaction of people when that courage is displayed. Those who understand and embrace the benefits of that courageous thought and action, themselves are emboldened to do the right thing. Those who are satisfied with the way things are, will find reason to rebel against the leader’s courage.

President Aquino took a bold move in banning sirens on private and non-emergency public vehicles. Of course, it is only a symbol but it is an important symbol. Less symbolic is his strong language about corruption. The cancellation of the “midnight” appointees also is symbolic but important. It would have been easier and less courageous just to have ignored the issue. He did not.

Honestly, though, it is easy to be courageous about corruption. Displaying economic courage is an entirely different matter and rarely has the Philippine government and its leaders shown economic courage.

You get a job offer from another company. Leaving the comfort zone of your present employer after many hears takes courage but you know that it is an economically wiser decision to transfer. Ever done that or known someone who has? That takes cojones.

You may have decided to quit your job after many years and struck out on your own, opening your own business. That takes a lot of courage, especially when many others are telling you how foolish you are both before and after you make the move.

President Fidel Ramos exhibited economic courage during his term. Deregulating and opening up the telecommunications sector was a bold and courageous move. Of course, the established system did not work very well. But changing to an unknown was frightening. And the small minority that benefited from the status quo fought madly to stop Ramos.

From the moment he uttered the words about public-private partnership in his State of the Nation Address, the benefactors of the current system began howling. Those who hate the private sector and love big government (because of the benefits they receive) bared their fangs and claws.

But those looking for courageous economic leadership, understanding the potential if the President’s vision could be realized, started thinking outside the comfort zone.

San Miguel Corp. vice chairman Ramon S. Ang is the first to challenge the President’s word and to test his resolve and courage. From the Daily Inquirer: Ang “is proposing the privatization of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. [Pagcor] to raise as much as $10 billion.” With $10 billion in cash, Ang said the impact of Pagcor’s privatization would be “stunning” not only on the government’s cash position but also on the country’s debt stock and economic standing in the region. Mr. Ang is right.

Privatizing Pagcor would be the jewel of public-private sector partnership for the government. The government would still regulate and control, but the government would receive a huge financial windfall unavailable any place else.

Pagcor’s casino operations are a bit of a joke in the international gaming and travel community. The only reason foreign gambling enthusiasts come to the Philippines is that it is cheap. I know. I used to be one. I have traveled to almost every major casino hub—Monaco, Las Vegas, Malaysia and Aruba. Pagcor’s casinos are exactly what they are supposed to be—a government-run corporation, lifeless, not very user-friendly, and non-competitive.

True, Mr. Ang is thinking very big with his proposal. But that is what real courage can lead to. That P450-billion investment would never be equaled. But think of what it could do for this economy. Each good-paying, sustainable job costs about P150,000 to create. Privatizing Pagcor could potentially create 3,000,000 new jobs if the government spends the money productively.

It will take an immense amount of courage on the President’s part to make this proposal happen. He will be opposed at every turn. He will have to fight every single individual who benefits under the current system. But that is what being a leader is all about.

Mr. Aquino now has been given the opportunity to put action behind his words and to prove to the nation that he has the courage to implement his convictions. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how this plays out over the next six months.

Are we entering a new era of economic leadership? The answer to that question rests with Malacañang.

My beloved countrymen:

Our administration is facing a forked road. On one direction, decisions are made to protect the welfare of our people; to look after the interest of the majority; to have a firm grip on principles; and to be faithful to the public servant’s sworn oath to serve the country honestly.
This is the straight path.

On the other side, personal interest is the priority, and where one becomes a slave to political considerations to the detriment of our nation.

This is the crooked path.

For a long time, our country lost its way in the crooked path. As days go by (since I became President), the massive scope of the problems we have inherited becomes much clearer. I could almost feel the weight of my responsibilities.

In the first three weeks of our administration, we discovered many things, and I will report to you some of the problems we have uncovered, and the steps we are taking to solve them.
This report is merely a glimpse of our situation. It is not the entire picture of the crises we are facing. The reality was hidden from our people, who seem to have been deliberately obfuscated on the real state of our nation.

In the first six years of this year, government expenditure exceeded our revenues. Our deficit further increased to PhP196.7 billion. Our collection targets, which lack PhP23.8 billion, were not fully met, while we went beyond our spending by PhP45.1 billion.

Our budget for 2010 is PhP1.54 trillion. Of this, only PhP100 billion - or 6.5% of the total budget – can be used for the remaining six months of the current year. Roughly 1% of the total budget is left for each of the remaining month.

Where did the funds go?

A calamity fund worth PhP2 billion was reserved in preparation for anticipated calamities. Of this already miniscule amount, at a time when the rainy season has yet to set in, PhP1.4 billion or 70% was already spent.

The entire province of Pampanga received PhP108 million. Of this, PhP105 million went to only one district. On the other hand, the province of Pangasinan, which was severely affected by Typhoon Pepeng, received a mere PhP5 million, which had to be used to fix damages inflicted not even by Pepeng, but by a previous typhoon, Cosme.

The funds were released on election month, which was seven months after the typhoon. What will happen if a typhoon arrives tomorrow? The fund has been used up to repair damage from typhoons that hit us last year. Our future will pay for the greed of yesterday.

This is also what happened to the funds of the MWSS. Just recently, people lined up for water while the leadership of the MWSS rewarded itself even though the pensions of retired employees remain unpaid.

The entire payroll of the MWSS amounts to 51.4 million pesos annually. But this isn’t the full extent of what they receive: they receive additional allowances and benefits amounting to 81.1 million pesos. In short, they receive 211.5 million pesos annually. Twenty four percent of this is for normal salaries, and sixty six percent is added on.

The average worker receives up to 13th month pay plus a cash gift. In the MWSS, they receive the equivalent of over thirty months pay if you include all their additional bonuses and allowances.

What we discovered in the case of the salaries of their board of trustees is even more shocking. Let’s take a look at the allowances they receive:

Attending board of trustees and board committee meetings, and you get fourteen thousands pesos. This totals ninety eight thousand pesos a month. They also get an annual grocery incentive of eighty thousand pesos.

And that’s not all. They get a mid-year bonus, productivity bonus, anniversary bonus, year-end bonus, and financial assistance. They not only get a Christmas bonus, but an additional Christmas package as well. Each of these amounts to eighty thousand pesos. All in all, each member of the board receives two and a half million pesos a year exclusive of car service, technical assistance, and loans. Let me repeat. They award themselves all of these while being in arrears for the pensions of their retired employees.

Even the La Mesa watershed wasn’t spared. In order to ensure an adequate supply of water, we need to protect our watersheds. In watersheds, trees are needed. Where there should be trees, they built homes for the top officials of the MWSS.

We cannot remove them from their positions quickly because they are among the midnight appointees of former president Arroyo. We are investigating all of these things. But if they have any shame left, they should voluntarily relinquish their positions.

Now let’s discuss funds for infrastructure. The DPWH identified two hundred forty six priority safety projects to be funded by the motor vehicle user’s charge. This needs a budget of 425 million pesos. What they ended up funding were only 28 projects. They disregarded 218 projects and replaced these with seventy projects that weren’t in the plans. The 425 million pesos originally asked for became 480 million pesos, increasing because of projects allocated for a favored few.

These projects make no sense: unstudied and unprepared for, sprouting like mushrooms.
The era of such projects is at an end. Under our administration, there will be no quotas, there will be no overpricing, the funds of the people will be spent for the people.

There’s more. Five days before the term of the previous administration ended, they ordered 3.5 billion pesos to be released for the rehabilitation of those affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. This was supposed to fund eighty-nine projects. But nineteen of these projects amounting to 981 million pesos didn’t go through public bidding. Special Allotment Release Orders hadn’t even been released and yet the contracts were already signed. It’s a good thing Secretary Rogelio Singson spotted and stopped them. Instead, they will all go through the proper bidding, and the funds will be used to provide relief to those who lost their homes due to typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

Let’s discuss what happened in Napocor. From 2001 to 2004, the government forced Napocor to sell electricity at a loss to prevent increases in electricity rates. The real motivation for this is that they were preparing for the election.

As a result, in 2004, NAPOCOR slumped deeply in debt. The government was obligated to shoulder the 200 billion pesos it owed.

What the public thought they saved from electricity, we are now paying for using public coffers. Not only are we paying for the cost of electricity; we are also paying for the interest arising from the debt.

If the money we borrowed was used properly, then there would be added assurance that constant supply of electricity is available. However, this decision was based on bad politics, not on the true needs of the people. The people, after having to sacrifice, suffered even more.

This is also what happened to the MRT. The government tried again to buy the people’s love. The operator was forced to keep the rates low.

In effect, the guarantee given to the operator that he will still be able to recoup his investment was not fulfilled. Because of this, Landbank and the Development Bank of the Philippines were ordered to purchase the MRT.

The money of the people was used in exchange for an operation that was losing money.
Let us now move on to the funds of the National Food Authority (NFA).

In 2004: 117,000 metric tons (of rice) was the shortage in the supply of the Philippines. What they (the government) bought were 900,000 metric tons. Even if you multiply for more than seven times the amount of shortage, they still bought more than what was needed.

In 2007: 589,000 metric tons was the shortage in the supply of the Philippines. What they bought were 1.827 million metric tons. Even if you multiply for more than three times the amount of shortage, they again bought more than what was needed.

What hurts is, because they keep purchasing more than what they need year after year, the excess rice that had to be stored in warehouses ended up rotting, just like what happened in 2008.

Is this not a crime, letting rice rot, despite the fact that there are 4 million Filipinos who do not eat three times a day?

The result is NFA’s current debt of 177 billion pesos.

This money that was wasted could have funded the following:

- The budget of the entire judiciary, which is at 12.7 billion pesos this year.
- The Conditional Cash Transfers for the following year, which cost 29.6 billion pesos.
- All the classrooms that our country needs, which cost 130 billion pesos.

This way of doing things is revolting. Money was there only to be wasted.

You have heard how the public coffers were squandered. This is what is clear to me now: change can only come from our determination to stamp out this extravagance and profligacy.
That is why starting now: we will stop the wasteful use of government funds. We will eradicate projects that are wrong.

This is the point of what we call the zero-based approach in our budget. What used to be the norm was every year, the budget merely gets re-enacted without plugging the holes.
Next month we will be submitting a budget that accurately identifies the problem and gives much attention on the right solution.

Those that I have mentioned were only some of the problems we have discovered. Here now are examples of the steps we are undertaking to solve them.

There is a case of one pawnshop owner. He purchased a vehicle at an estimated cost of 26 million pesos.

If he can afford to buy a Lamborghini, why can’t he pay his taxes?

A case has already been filed against him. Through the leadership of Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, BIR Commissioner Kim Henares, Customs Commissioner Lito Alvarez, and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, every week we have new cases filed against smugglers and against those who do not pay the right taxes.

We have also already identified the suspects of the cases of Francisco Baldomero, Jose Daguio and Miguel Belen, 3 of the 6 incidents of extralegal killings since we assumed the Presidency.

Fifty percent (50%) of these incidents of extralegal killings are now on their way to being resolved.

We will not stop the pursuit of the remaining half of these killings until justice has been achieved.

We will hold murderers accountable. We will also hold those who are corrupt that work in government accountable for their actions.

We have begun forming our Truth Commission, through the leadership of former Chief Justice Hilario Davide. We will search for the truth on the alleged wrongdoing committed in the last nine years.

This week, I will sign the first ever Executive Order on the formation of this Truth Commission.

If the answer to justice is accountability, the answer to the dearth in funds is a new and creative approach to our long-standing problems.

We have so many needs: from education, infrastructure, health, military, police and more. Our funds will not be enough to meet them.

No matter how massive the deficit is that may keep us from paying for this list of needs, I am heartened because many have already expressed renewed interest and confidence in the Philippines.

Our solution: public-private partnerships. Although no contract has been signed yet, I can say that ongoing talks with interested investors will yield fruitful outcomes.
There are some who have already shown interest and want to build an expressway from Manila that will pass through Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, until the end of Cagayan Valley, without the government having to spend a single peso.

On national defense:

We have 36,000 nautical miles of shoreline, but we only have 32 boats. These boats are as old as the time of (US General Douglas) MacArthur.

Some had this proposition: they will rent the Navy headquarters on Roxas Boulevard and the Naval Station in Fort Bonifacio.

They will take care of the funding necessary to transfer the Navy Headquarters to Camp Aguinaldo. Immediately, we will be given 100 million dollars. Furthermore, they will give us a portion of their profits from their businesses that would occupy the land they will rent.
In short, we will meet our needs without spending, and we will also earn.

There have already been many proposals from local to foreign investors to provide for our various needs.

From these public-private partnerships, our economy will grow and every Filipino will be the beneficiary. There are so many sectors that could benefit from this.

We will be able to construct the needed infrastructure in order to help tourism grow.
In agriculture, we will be able to have access to grains terminals, refrigeration facilities, orderly road networks and post-harvest facilities.

If we can fix out food supply chain with the help of the private sector, instead of importing, we will hopefully be able to supply for the needs of the global market.

The prices of commodities will go down if we are able to make this efficient railway system a reality. It will be cheaper and faster, and it will be easier for travelers to avoid crooked cops and rebels.

A reminder to all: creating jobs is foremost on our agenda, and the creation of jobs will come from the growth of our industries. Growth will only be possible if we streamline processes to make them predictable, reliable and efficient for those who want to invest.

We make sure that the Build-Operate-and-Transfer projects will undergo quick and efficient processes. With the help of all government agencies concerned and the people, a process that used to take as short as a year and as long as a decade will now only take six months.
The Department of Trade and Industry has already taken steps to effect this change, under the leadership of Secretary Gregory Domingo:

The never-ending horror story of registering business names, which used to take a minimum of four to eight hours depending on the day, will be cut down drastically to fifteen minutes.
What used to be a check list of thirty-six documents will be shortened to a list of six, and the old eight-page application form will be whittled down to one page.

I call on our local government units to review its own procedures. While we look for more ways to streamline our processes to make business start-ups easier, I hope the LGUs can also find ways to implement reforms that will be consistent with the ones we have already started.

All will certainly benefit from this streamlining -- be it businessmen, soldiers, rebels and ordinary Filipinos. As long as the interests of Filipinos will not be jeopardized, we will explore all available avenues to make this a reality. We must start now, and we should all help achieve this and not stand in each other’s way.

The time when we will no longer be made to choose between our people’s security and the future of our children is upon us now.

Once we implement these public-private partnerships, we will be able to fund public service in accordance with our platform.

This will enable us to fund our plans for education.

We will be able to expand our basic education cycle from seven years to the global standard of twelve years.

We can build more classrooms, and we will fund service contracting under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education Program (GASTPE).
Conditional cash transfers that aim to lessen the burden of education on parents will also be funded if this partnership becomes a reality.

Our plans for improving PhilHealth can now be within reach.

First, we will identify the correct number of Filipinos who sorely need PhilHealth coverage, as current data is conflicting on this matter. On one hand, PhilHealth says that eighty-seven percent (87%) of Filipinos are covered, then lowers the number to only fifty-three percent (53%). On the other hand, the National Statistics Office says that only thirty-eight percent (38%) of Filipinos are covered by Philhealth.

Even as we speak, Secretary Dinky Soliman and the Department of Social Welfare and Development are moving to implement the National Household Targeting System that will identify the families that most urgently need assistance. An estimated 9 billion pesos is needed in order to provide coverage for five million poor Filipinos.

Our country is beginning to see better days ahead. The private sector, the League of Provinces headed by Governor Alfonso Umali, together with Governors L-Ray Villafuerte and Icot Petilla, are now ready to do their share when it comes to shouldering the financial burden. I know that the League of Cities under the leadership of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez will not be far behind.

If the local governments share in our goals, I know that I can surely count on Congress, the institution where I began public service, to push for our agenda for change.
Our Cabinet has already showed it skill by identifying not just problems but also proposing solutions in a matter of three weeks.

In the aftermath of Typhoon Basyang, we were told by those in the power sector that we would be without electricity for four days. The quick action of Secretary Rene Almendras and the Department of Energy resulted in the restoration of power to almost all those affected within twenty-four hours.

The so-called water shortage in Metro Manila was quickly attended to by Secretary Rogelio Singson and the Department of Public Works and Highways. Secretary Singson did it without prodding, which alleviated the suffering of those affected.

We also witnessed the competence and initiative of those we appointed to be part of our Cabinet. It is but just that they not be forced to go through the eye of a needle to be confirmed by the Commission on Appointments. Should this happen, competent Filipinos will be encouraged to help our country by becoming public servants.

In the soonest possible time, we will convene the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) to discuss the important bills that need to be addressed. Rest assured that I will keep an open mind and treat you honorably.

We will push for the Fiscal Responsibility Bill, which will limit spending bills only for appropriations that have identified a source of funding. We need 104.1 billion pesos to fund those laws already passed but whose implementation remains pending because of lack of funds.

We will re-evaluate fiscal incentives given in the past. Now that we are tightening our purse strings, we need to identify those incentives that will remain and those that need to be done away with.

We will not allow another NBN-ZTE scandal to happen again. Whether from local or foreign sources, all proposed contracts must undergo the scrutiny of correct procedures. I now ask for your help with amending our Procurement Law.

According to our Constitution, it is the government’s duty to ensure that the market is fair for all. No monopolies, no cartels that kill competition. We need an Anti-Trust Law that will give life to these principles, to afford Small- and Medium-Scale Enterprises the opportunity to participate in the growth of our economy.

Let us pass into law the National Land Use Bill.

It was in 1935, during the Commonwealth, that the National Defense Act was passed. There is a need to amend for a new law that is more responsive to the current needs of national security.

I appeal to our legislators to pass the Whistleblower’s Bill to eradicate the prevalent culture of fear and silence that has hounded our system.

We will strengthen the Witness Protection Program. We must remember that from 2009 to 2010 alone, cases which involved the participation of witnesses under the program resulted in a ninety-five percent conviction.

There is a need to review our laws. I call on our lawmakers to begin a re-codification of our laws to ensure harmony in legislation and eliminate contradictions.

These laws serve as the basis of order in our land, but the foundation of all rests on the principle that we cannot grow without peace and order.

We face two obstacles on our road to peace: the situation in Mindanao and the continued revolt of the CPP-NPA-NDF.

Our view has not changed when it comes to the situation in Mindanao. We will only achieve lasting peace if all stakeholders engage in an honest dialogue: may they be Moro, Lumad, or Christian. We have asked Dean Marvic Leonen to head our efforts to talk to the MILF.

We will learn from the mistakes of the past administration, that suddenly announced an agreement reached without consultations from all concerned. We are not blind to the fact that it was done with political motivation, and that the interest behind it was not that of the people.
We recognize the efforts of the MILF to discipline those within its ranks. We are hopeful that the negotiations will begin after Ramadan.

To the CPP-NPA-NDF: are you prepared to put forth concrete solutions rather than pure criticism and finger-pointing?

If it is peace you truly desire, then we are ready for an immediate cease-fire. Let us go back to the table and begin talking again.

It is difficult to begin discussions in earnest if the smell of gun powder still hangs in the air. I call on everyone concerned not to waste a good opportunity to rally behind our common aspiration for peace.

Our foundation for growth is peace. We will continue to be shackled by poverty if the crossfire persists.

We must understand that now is a time for sacrifice. It is this sacrifice that will pave the way for a better future. With our freedom comes our responsibility to do good unto our fellows and to our country.

To our friends in media, especially those in radio and print, to the block-timers and those in our community newspapers, I trust that you will take up the cudgels to police your own ranks.
May you give new meaning to the principles of your vocation: to provide clarity to pressing issues; to be fair and truthful in your reporting, and to raise the level of public discourse.
It is every Filipino’s duty to closely watch the leaders that you have elected. I encourage everyone to take a step towards participation rather than fault-finding. The former takes part in finding a solution; from the latter, never-ending complaints.

We have always known that the key to growth is putting the interest of others beyond one’s own. One thing is clear: how do we move forward if we keep putting others down?

How will those without education secure quality jobs? How will the unemployed become consumers? How will they save money for their future needs?

If we change all this, if we prioritize enabling others, we will open a world of opportunities not just for ourselves but for those who direly need it.

We have already begun the process of change, and we are now able to dream of better things for our country. Let us not forget that there are those who wish us to fail, so that they will once again reclaim power to do as they please at the expense of our people.

My firm belief is that our fate is in the hands of God and our people. While we focus on uplifting the lives of our fellow men, I have an unshakeable faith that Almighty God will give us His blessings and support. If we remain firm in our belief that God is on our side, is there anything impossible for us to achieve?

The mandate we received last May 10 is testament to the fact that the Filipino continues to hope for true change. The situation is not what it was before; we can all dream again. Let us all become one in achieving a fulfilment of our hopes and aspirations for our country.

However, surprisingly enough, 80 percent of businesses started by experienced businesspeople succeed. Now why should this be so? The reason is because experienced businesspeople know what to do. Control Your Costs

The second reason that businesses fail, 46 percent, is because of poor cost control. They may be selling enough on the front end, but they're losing so much on the back end that they go broke anyway. Sales and marketing, financing and cost control, both require experience. And if you're serious about becoming financially independent, you have to learn how to do both of these.

Put Luck On Your Side

You must learn the skills you need to be successful. Business success is not a matter of luck. Business success is a matter of application. It's a matter of ability. It's a matter of experience and skill and intelligence, and wonderfully enough, you can learn what you need to know to be successful. And you can start by learning through on-the-job training, which is called OJT. Most successful businesspeople become successful because they get all their training by working for someone else.

First, take the time to get the knowledge and experience you need in business by working for someone else where you can learn a lot in a short period of time. Go to work in an area in which you are interested and learn everything you possibly can.

Aquino Needs to Reduce Philippine Deficit With `Bold' Targets, Pimco Says

Philippine President-elect Benigno Aquino, who may unveil his choice for finance chief as early as today, needs to cut the budget deficit and increase investment to boost growth, Pacific Investment Management Co. said.

“If the new finance secretary can articulate a credible fiscal consolidation program to help move the Philippines to investment-grade category in the next three to five years’ time, that would be a tremendous market booster,” Chia-Liang Lian, a Singapore-based fund manager at Pimco, which runs the world’s largest bond fund, said in a June 25 interview.

Philippine growth has lagged behind its Southeast Asian neighbors as a budget shortfall in all but four of the past 25 years curtailed the government’s ability to develop an economy where the World Bank estimates one in every four people live on less than $1.25 a day. Aquino, who will replace Gloria Arroyo this week, has refrained from saying whether he will reduce the deficit, forecast by policy makers to hold near a record level.

Global bonds issued by the Philippines have returned 17 percent in the past year, less than Indonesia’s 30 percent advance, according to an HSBC Index that tracks the region’s dollar bonds. The country’s debt is rated below investment level by Fitch Ratings, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service, and is graded lower than that of neighboring Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

In the 20 years through 2009, the Philippine economy expanded an average 3.7 percent annually, lagging behind Thailand’s 4.7 percent and Malaysia’s 6 percent.

Regional Underperformer

“The Philippines will not be attaining investment grade anytime soon,” Edwin Gutierrez, who helps manage about $5 billion in emerging-market debt at Aberdeen Management Plc in London, said in an e-mail today. “The lack of public investment which poor tax collections condemns the Philippines to also implies that it will continue to be a regional underperformer with respect to growth.”

The president-elect, whose mother Corazon Aquino helped oust former dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, has vowed to go after tax evaders and corrupt officials rather than raise taxes.

Philippine policy makers expect the budget shortfall to be little changed at 297.2 billion pesos this year from a record 298.5 billion pesos in 2009. That’s more than the 293.2 billion- peso gap forecast earlier. The five-month deficit widened to 162.1 billion pesos, exceeding the first-half target.

Bold, Realistic

“I want a promise that the new administration will cut the deficit,” said Yvette Marquez, who helps manage about 480 billion pesos ($10 billion) at BPI Asset Management in Manila. “They have to generate revenue either by generating more economic activity, raising taxes, or encouraging foreign direct investments.”

The Philippine peso climbed for the first time in five days, rising 0.2 percent to 46.35 per dollar at 2:31 p.m. in Manila on optimism Aquino will announce policies to boost economic growth. Benchmark four-year bond yields fell one basis point.

“Macro targets need to be bold yet realistic at the same time, to the end that policy makers are not seen as over- promising but under-delivering,” said Lian. Pimco, which has more than $1 trillion of assets, owns and is “supportive” of Philippine dollar-denominated debt, he said.

This year’s budget gap is estimated at 3.6 percent of gross domestic product, from 3.9 percent last year, according to government forecasts. Fitch Ratings predicts the deficit will be 4 percent of GDP, excluding asset sales.

Pressing Concern

“In the near term, the deficit is a more pressing concern,” Andrew Colquhoun, Hong Kong-based head of Asia- Pacific sovereigns at Fitch, said in an e-mailed reply to questions from Bloomberg News last week. “A lower deficit would support the sovereign credit-worthiness of the Philippines and we are looking out for more details on the fiscal policy strategy of the new administration.”

Aquino on June 17 said he will “need to verify” the fiscal data “to determine the appropriate action to take” on the budget shortfall and other economic targets. He has said he plans to unveil the appointments to his cabinet and economic team this week.

Cesar Purisima, who was Arroyo’s finance secretary in 2005, is part of Aquino’s group of advisers. Philippine newspapers including Philippine Daily Inquirer have reported that Aquino will return Purisima to the post he left in July 2005.

Spending Raised

Gary Teves, the current finance secretary, said last week the new administration should consider a proposal to raise taxes, including the value-added tax, to increase revenue by 94 billion pesos next year.

The government raised its 2010 spending budget for public works, salaries and debt payments to a record 1.62 trillion pesos from a previous forecast of 1.58 trillion pesos, Budget Undersecretary Laura Pascua said in an interview last week. Revenue, including gains from the sale and lease of assets, may climb to 1.32 trillion pesos compared with an earlier estimate of 1.28 trillion pesos, she said.

Fitch rates the Philippines BB, two levels below investment grade. The company in January raised Indonesia’s rating to one step below investment grade. S&P rates Philippine debt BB- and Moody’s has a Ba3 grade, both three levels below investment.

Philippine GDP growth may accelerate to a range of 5 percent to 6 percent this year from 1.1 percent in 2009, officials predicted earlier this month. The country’s $167 billion economy expanded 7.3 percent last quarter, the fastest pace in almost three years, increasing demand for Ayala Land Inc. homes and Banco de Oro Unibank Inc. loans.

“One focal point for the Philippines is to boost its investment spending, a necessary ingredient to bolstering its long-term GDP growth potential,” Pimco’s Lian said. “Policy makers should accelerate efforts to promote the country as a destination for foreign direct investments.”

Know the Right People

One of the greatest forms of financial leverage is contacts. Knowing the right people and being known by them can open doors for you that can save you years of hard work. The quality and quantity of your contacts and your relationships will have more to do with your success than perhaps any other factor.

Here are three things you can do to expand your list of contacts. First, make a list of the 25 people you feel it would be most useful for you to get to know. Develop a strategy to get to meet everyone of them over the next 12 months. Then make a list of 25 more.

List the people in charge of the major corporations that would be useful for you to know. List the mayor, list the congressmen, list the senator. List the important people that it would be helpful for you to know and then make a plan to meet them.

Network at Every Opportunity

Second is for you to network at every opportunity. Join business and trade associations. Attend meetings. Get involved. Volunteer for service on a key committee. This action alone can cut years off your career.

Once, when I was working with the Chamber of Commerce, I came to the attention of a senior executive who hired me away from the company I was working for a year later at triple the salary. Meeting people is very important. Network at every opportunity.

Get Involved in the Community

The third way is to get involved in community service organizations. The best people in every community, the people you should know and who should know you, are usually involved in public service in some way. Start with the major charitable organizations in your own city, or get involved in any charity that you care about or that you're interested in. You'll be amazed at the quality of people that you'll meet doing voluntary service.

Unlock Your Creativity

Another form of leverage is creativity. Remember, one new idea is all you need to start a fortune. Everyone has the ability to come up with creative ideas and solutions if they look for them. All great fortunes begin with an idea.

Create Good Work Habits

A powerful form of leverage that can help you is good work habits. Good work habits make an extraordinary difference. In a recent study, 104 chief executive officers all agreed that the ability to set priorities and then to get the job done fast were the two qualities that most readily led to promotion and increases in pay. Good work habits will bring you to the attention of the important people in your life as fast or faster than anything else you can do. In the final analysis, you always get paid for your results. If you develop a reputation for being the person who gets the job done fast, that alone can put you onto the fast track in your career.

All of us have always dreamt of what we want to be in the future while we were young. We have imagined ourselves being Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, and a CEO of a company. From where we are now, we always look back and see how far we have come but reality always strikes in. We don’t always get to have what we want but it’s not always impossible to be who we want to be.

They say that the world has made it rough for us but if we think about it the world has offered so much to us even in times of recession. It’s always a matter of perspective and knowing its causes and effects. So what does the recession mean?

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) it is a significant decline in activity across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade. The technical indicator of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (GDP)

Recession is basically normal for it is a part of a business cycle however certain critical events may trigger the initiation of a global recession. Like the recent recession in the United States that affected the rest of the world. It centered the people’s attention to the risky investment strategies used by many large financial institutions. It was then very eye-opening to all nations whether developed or still developing ones; it helped each government to amend and implement policies to help prevent future financial crisis.

Due to these circumstances, most companies have cut back on their expenses and reconfigured their strategies. Some companies were acquired by larger ones however there were those who closed. Even large companies had to shut down some of their branches, or warehouses, or retail stores. Although the Philippines is one of the countries that somehow benefited by it, in a sense that other countries looked into outsourcing. Our country is fortunately on the pool for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Contact Centers. Some foreigners especially Koreans also fly into the country to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) as they find it more effective yet affordable. On the other hand, it also affected us in a way that some of the companies have closed here in the Philippines especially those affiliated or branches of foreign companies.

Over some time DitoNa.com have conducted a survey on how the recession has affected your career. You can see the final percentages of the votes on the image. Majority of those who voted with 23.88% says that due to recession they have No Salary Increase, 20.9% says that it only gives them Fewer Opportunities which is contrary to 10.45% of the voters who says that they have more Career Opportunities; It caused 16.42% of the voters to lose their jobs; 10.45% stayed on neutral ground saying they are not affected at all; the last in poll both having 8.96% are the voters who says they have Fewer Job Prospects and Career Change.

As we look into the impacts of recession, from the increase of the unemployment rate, the fall of productivity of businesses, and the change on the living standards or the lifestyle of the people dependent on their wages and salaries; we should also look into what we can do about it. Let us always remember that our ancestors before had nothing yet they made so much out of it. We can take this as a challenge to our generation and come up with ideas that would brighten this dark time. Let this not be a hindrance to our goals and dreams of becoming who we want to be yet this should serve as our challenge.

However this recession has affected you; let us always see this in a different view. If you have lost your job maybe it was never meant for you and a better one is coming up. If you have kept yours then you have a reason to be more grateful. If it lessens your opportunities then maybe you should look into each one of it and see how it goes perhaps it may turn out to be the best one for you. The salaries may not increase but maybe it’s a matter of a change in lifestyle, cutting back on some expenses, or a matter of just holding on until the recession is over. There is always enough for us in this world so let’s always look at things on the bright side.

As the saying goes, “When a door closes, a window opens.” Let us then look into the window of opportunities and eventually finish the cycle and hope for a better tomorrow.

I grew up in Hilo on the Big Island in Hawaii. Hilo is a sugar town, or at least it was, and there was a divide among the rich plantation owners and the plantation workers. The divide was more than just income. Even the schools were divided. The poor kids of the plantation workers went to Hilo Union Elementary School and the rich kids of the plantation owners went to Riverside School—these schools were literally across the road from each other.

When I was nine years old, we moved across the street into a small rambler by Riverside School. My dad was the Head of Education for the State of Hawaii, and when we moved, I was able to attend Riverside School instead of Hilo Union Elementary School. For the first time in my life, I felt poor.

Though my dad was highly educated and was a great government employee, he had a low financial intelligence and wasn’t very good with money. As a result, we were always struggling. As a kid at Hilo Union Elementary School, I didn’t know the difference—everyone was poor. But once I started going to Riverside School, it quickly became apparent that my family was poor and that the kids I went to school with were rich.

At a young age, I knew I wanted to be rich. I saw my parents struggle and the stress it brought, and I knew that wasn’t for me. I wanted to buy nice things, be generous, and enjoy life worry free.

When I told my rich dad, my best friend’s dad who was a successful businessman, that I wanted to be rich, he asked, “How do you think you become rich?”

“You make a lot of money,” I said confidently.

“That’s partially correct,” my rich dad said. “But you can make a lot of money and still not be rich.” He went on to explain how some employees and self-employed people made a lot of money but weren’t rich because they had low financial intelligence. They lost most of their wealth to high taxes and by purchasing liabilities.

That was too much for my young brain to comprehend. I just knew I wanted to make a lot of money. But now that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I understand what my rich dad meant. Money doesn’t make you rich. Your financial intelligence does.

That’s why our mantra at Rich Dad is Knowledge is the New Money.

A recent article I read in Fortune Magazine entitled “Why the ‘rich’ aren’t feeling so rich”, highlights further what I mean by this. The article’s author, Shawn Tully, invented a term that is catching on—HENRY. It’s an acronym for “High Earners, Not Rich Yet”. What Tully is getting at is that those we’d consider rich because they make a lot of money, such as doctors and lawyers making $250,000 to $500,000, aren’t really rich at all.

Why?

Because they lose so much money to taxes, their income is based on the services they provide rather than passive income from investments, and they spend their money on liabilities like homes instead of on assets that produce cash flow.

As Tully writes, “When my story appeared, just before the presidential election, Barack Obama was targeting the HENRYs for big tax increases, declaring that families making over $250,000 a year were ‘the rich’ and needed to ‘pay their fair share.’ Even then, I argued, the HENRYs were so squeezed between their big expenses for the things they considered staples -- private schools and day care for the kids, for example -- and an immense tax burden that typically took $100,000 from a $350,000 income, that they not only weren't rich, but stood little chance of ever saving the big nest egg to qualify as truly wealthy.”

This is something I talk about in my book Conspiracy of the Rich: The 8 New Rules of Money. There are four things that steal your wealth: Taxes, Debt, Inflation, and Retirement. People who make a lot of money aren’t necessarily rich because they lose so much of it to those four forces.

Here’s an example. Let’s say we have two people who both earn $100,000. One pays 20 percent in taxes, has a crippling mortgage, and saves money in a 401(k) that barely keeps up with inflation. The other pays nothing in taxes, owns rental properties that provide passive income that adjusts with inflation, and has a plan to use that passive income to purchase more passive income investments. Who’s richer? It’s possible to make a lot of money and use the forces of taxes, debt, inflation, and retirement for your benefit—but it takes high financial intelligence.

Here’s the fundamental problem for ‘the rich’, high-income employees: They have the highest tax burden, the lowest control over their retirement, and can sell only their time.

My CASHFLOW Quadrant explains this simply. There are four types of people: Employees (E’s), Self-Employed (S’s), Big Business Owners (B’s), and Investors (I’s). The E’s and S’s are on the left side of the CASHFLOW Quadrant and the B’s and I’s are on the right side of the quadrant. Those on the left side pay the most in taxes, have the least control, and will never be truly rich. These are people like blue-collar employees but also people like doctors and lawyers who are self-employed but really don’t own a company—they own a job. They are victims to the four wealth-stealing forces.

Those on the right side, however, have all the tax advantages; have control over their money, business, and investments; and have the possibility of infinite returns because they know how to create money out of thin air through passive income. And they know how to use Taxes, Debt, Inflation, and Retirement to make them even richer—not poorer. And third, always strive to exceed the expectations of your customers, your boss, of the people you serve. Always do more and better than you're paid for.

The third type of leverage is money. Money is a powerful source of leverage and usually follows the development of knowledge and skill in your field. One of the reasons that it takes money to make money is that the accumulation of funds is an essential step in the development of the personal qualities and character that must precede the achievement of financial independence. In other words, you become the person capable of becoming financially independent by accumulating the funds that are necessary for you to achieve it.

Your Area of Uniqueness

We call this its area of uniqueness. And it is central to success in business. No product or service can succeed unless it is somehow unique and superior to any other product or service like it. There is seldom any real opportunity in what is called a "me too" product - one that is just the same as all the others. At the same time, the safest business strategy is to start off with an accepted product that you can improve. In other words, instead of trying to invent a whole new business or industry, start off with something that people are already doing, people are already buying and using, and find some way to improve it.

Guard Against the Worst

Because of this habit of advance planning, I have never had an insurmountable problem because of baggage delays or losses. On the way to your destination, in the achievement of your most important goal, continually ask yourself, "What are the worst possible things that can happen?" And then guard against them.

Plan for Any Eventuality

The mark of a superior thinker is that he or she assumes that the worst will happen and makes provisions against it. Napoleon Bonaparte was once asked if he believed in luck. He replied, “Yes, I do. I believe in bad luck. I believe I will always have it, and I plan accordingly.”

Refuse to be Passive

My traveling experiences have taught me two things. First, prepare for the worst. No matter what anyone tells you, be prepared for the possibility that he or she will not follow through. Second, be proactive, not passive. Instead of becoming angry or depressed, get busy and get going. Find an alternative. Refuse to accept the current situation if it is not satisfactory. Instead of waiting for things to happen, make things happen.

Prepare a Checklist

Pilots carefully review a checklist prior to every flight. Even if they have flown thousands of hours and have been active pilots for twenty years, they still go through the checklist every single time. You should prepare a checklist as well. No matter how many times you have made the same trip, you should review your checklist once more. Never trust to memory. The failure to check just one critical detail can leave you stranded and maybe even put your destination out of reach. As you proceed toward your personal destinations and struggle toward your goals, the consequences of not following your checklist will not be as severe. But it is not unusual for a business to go broke or a person to lose all his or her money because someone failed to pay attention to a critical detail.

April 21 (Bloomberg) -- Philippine tycoon Manuel Villar pledged to deliver “quick fixes” for the nation’s agricultural and infrastructure shortcomings should he defeat front runner Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino in the May 10 presidential election.

“What will impress foreign investors is if they see things moving in this country,” Villar, 60, said in an interview yesterday in Manila’s business district. “If you go to Shanghai, every three months you will see a different landscape.”

Aquino, the 50-year-old son of a former president, has built a lead in polls by painting his rival as corrupt. Villar, ousted as Senate leader in 2008 amid graft allegations, counters that his experience as a property developer who survived a credit crisis makes him the only candidate qualified to revive an economy that trails the rest of the region.

“Our neighbors have left us behind precisely because of the incompetence of our leaders,” Villar said. “The next president will be confronted by serious problems. He must be able to manage the country’s problems from day one.”

Aquino led 37 percent to 29 percent in a Social Weather Stations survey commissioned by Villar. The March 28-30 poll had a 2.2 percentage point margin of error.

The successor to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will be squeezed between the need to alleviate poverty and the lack of funds to do it. One in four Filipinos live on less than $1.25 a day and the government has run an annual budget surplus only four times in the past 24 years.

Investment Gap

The Philippines received $1.5 billion in foreign direct investment in 2008, compared with $7.3 billion for Malaysia, and $9.8 billion for Thailand, Association of Southeast Asian Nation statistics show. Its $167 billion economy ranks 13th among 17 in Asia tracked by Bloomberg, while its population comes in seventh.

Villar’s “platform is that what he did in the private sector he can do for everyone else,” said Luz Lorenzo, an economist at ATR-KimEng Securities Inc. in Manila.

As a boy, Villar helped his mother sell shrimp in Manila’s largest market before earning degrees in business and accounting. After running a sand-and-gravel business, he built low-cost housing before winning a congressional seat in 1992 and taking his company, C&P Homes Inc., public three years later.

Creditor Accord

Laden with debt after the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, the company settled with creditors in 2007, the same year Villar sold shares in Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc. He has a personal fortune of $530 million, according to Forbes magazine.

Villar almost closed Aquino’s lead in January. The gap has since widened amid allegations he’s secretly backed by the unpopular Arroyo and used his Senate career to accrue wealth.

If elected, his top priority will be to improve tax revenue by cutting corruption and wringing out bureaucratic efficiencies. To deliver results quickly, Villar said he’ll focus on what’s achievable and affordable.

“If you really want to reduce poverty significantly, you’ve got to address agriculture,” he said, because more than 60 percent of Filipinos rely on farming for their livelihood. “It may contribute only 20 or 30 percent of the economy, but it affects a lot of people.”

Fixing irrigation, providing cheap loans to millers and investing in transportation and storage facilities would provide an immediate boost, he said. The Philippines loses as much rice from poor storage and transportation as it imports, he said.

Road Budget

The roads budget could also be better used, he said, citing the need to extend the main highway through Luzon, the archipelago’s biggest island, and improve links with ports.

The challenge is “really tough,” Villar said. “Improperly handled, it could be a crisis.”

Eliminating corruption may prove equally daunting in a country ranked 139th out of 180 by graft watchdog Transparency International. Villar’s ouster as Senate leader came after a fellow member raised graft allegations concerning a highway that ran through his property. He has denied any impropriety and the Senate hasn’t voted on censure recommendations laid by 12 of the 23 senators, including Aquino.

“His wealth is tightly related to his being a public official,” said Ramon Casiple, executive director of the Manila-based Institute for Political and Economic Reform. “He became rich when he entered government.”

Villar said he now wants to focus on the need for leadership, rather than rebutting Aquino’s “black propaganda.”

“They want to avoid discussing who is more competent,” he said. “I am up against someone who has no experience, has not demonstrated any managerial ability, and has not led anything.”

Mother’s Son

Aquino entered the presidential race following the death last year of his mother, former president Corazon Aquino, who remains a popular figure for her role in toppling dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. Opponents say the son has achieved little in 12 years as a legislator.

The country’s future depends on finding the right leader, Villar said, citing examples such as Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

“Always there is that one man, that leader, who is able to turn the country around,” he said. “My dream is to be that man.”

The second area where the Law of accumulation works is with regard to money. Every large fortune is an accumulation of hundreds and thousands of small amounts of money, and the place to start is to take any amount of money that you can right now and begin to save it. When you begin to save money, it sets up a force field of energy and it triggers the law of attraction. As a result you begin to attract to you even more bits of money to add to your savings.

Attract Riches Into Your Life

And I've spoken to many, many successful people and they've told me the same story. That as soon as you start to put savings aside, it starts to attract into your life and into your work all the money that you need to achieve your goals. The reason why most people retire poor is they never put the initial savings aside to start with.

Get The Experience You Need

The third area where the law of accumulation applies is in the area of experience. You'll find that successful people in any field are those who have far more experience in that field than the average. And there is nothing that replaces experience. Whether it's in business or entrepreneurship or management or parenting or selling or anything else. Many people do not take the risks that are necessary to move out of their comfort zone because they're afraid it won't work out.

Everything Counts

But the fact is that until you move out of the comfort zone and get the experience from making the mistakes, it's not possible for you to grow and become capable of earning the kind of money that you desire. Now here's the key to the law of accumulation. It says that everything counts. Everything that you do counts. The biggest mistake that people make is they think that only what they want to count, counts. That when you read a book, when you listen to an audio program, when you go to a course, when you go to bed early and you get up early and you work, it all counts. And it's all going on the plus side of your ledger.

Use Your Time Well

But when you watch television, waste time, hang out, fool around and so on, all of that counts, as well, and it's going on the negative side. A person who has a great life, by the law of accumulation, is a person who's accumulated far more credits on the credit side than debits on the debit side. And here's an important point. If what you are doing is not moving you towards your goals, then it's moving you away from your goals. Nothing is neutral. Everything that you're doing is either moving you toward the things that you want to accomplish in life, the person you want to be, the wealth you want to accumulate, or it's moving you away. Everything counts. The law of accumulation says that everything counts.

Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Manny Villar said the country’s hopes for high sustainable economic growth in the next decade or two will rest on the ability of the next administration to develop and nurture a “legion of entrepreneur- warriors.”

“Our country will need a legion of entrepreneur-warriors, men and women who will be willing to take the future in their own hands and create economic growth and, subsequently, economic wealth,” Villar said.

“And the task at hand for the next administration is to make sure that all available resources, assistance, expertise and support are made available to them— through microfinancing and other funding programs, through infrastructure support, and most of all through proper guidance and governance,” he said.

Villar said he is ready to put in place an entrepreneur-friendly and entrepreneur-ready environment.

“Putting an economic model in place will spur entrepreneurial growth, create more jobs, and teach Filipinos the advantage of self-reliance,” he said.

The NP standard-bearer said the biggest challenge for the next president of the Republic is how to eliminate poverty.

“We have to promote entrepreneurship in all aspects of society as a way out of poverty. We need to educate the youth in the high-school and college levels about the values and technical intricacies of entrepreneurial ventures,” Villar said.

At the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of the Philippines presidential debate on Monday, World Bank country director Bert Hofman said the Philippines should muster high savings and investments if it wants to achieve growth of 7 percent or more in the next quarter-century.

Hofman said the Philippine economy needs to grow faster if it wants to see its income levels become comparable with developed countries within a generation.

Villar said this kind of growth can only be achieved if the economic base is made more productive, from the production as well as consumption ends.

“Wealth generation is a direct result of more income opportunities which, in turn, is created by an entrepreneurial revolution. This model should be made the rule rather than the exception, where we will have millions of Filipino entrepreneurs creating wealth for themselves and for others through jobs and other income-generating opportunities,” he said.

He said this model should be replicated in far-flung areas through training and mentoring, backed by assistance programs from local and national governments, and supported and sustained by the private sector through initiatives like public-private partnerships.

It has been said that, “Money may not be the most important thing, but it's way up there with oxygen.” The fastest and easiest way to get the things you want as quickly as possible is almost always to have enough money to be able to buy them, whatever they cost. For this reason, the desire to acquire money, quickly and easily, and as much as possible, is a major motivator of human behavior. But it is not usually money that people really want.

Freedom

Sometimes I will ask my people why they want to acquire a lot of money. After thinking about their answer for a couple of minutes, they finally conclude that what they want more than anything else is “freedom.” In reality, they see money as a means to achieving the freedom they really desire. They define freedom as having enough money so they can get everything they want. Having enough money will enable them to be completely free from worry about safety, security, leisure, love, respect and fulfillment. They see having lots of money as the fastest way to a good life.

One Hundred Million Pesos

In our Advanced Coaching and Mentoring Program, we do an exercise in Values Clarification. When everyone is seated, we hand out individual checks made out to each person in the amount of 100 million pesos. Of course, the checks are not cashable, but the idea of receiving 100 million pesos cash gives people an opportunity to fantasize about what they really want in their lives. We then have participants break into groups, discuss what they would do if they suddenly received 100 million pesos, and then report back to the group. We go around the room and write down their answers on a white board or flip chart. Here is the most amazing discovery: almost everything that our clients would want to do, have, or acquire, does not cost any money!

The desire for power is one of the most destructive forces in the world today, and always has been. If the fastest and easiest way to get all the things you want is to have all the money you need, it then follows that the fastest and easiest way to get the money you need is to acquire power over people and resources, both in business and at the political level. Power can be defined as “the ability to control or influence money, people and resources.” It is the ability to force people to do what you want them to do, whether or not it is consistent with their own personal desires.

Money and Power Together

Money starts out as the motivation for an expedient person to fulfill his needs, for himself and his family. It can soon become an end in itself. Once a person has enough money so that he no longer worries about money, it becomes a form of measurement, a scorecard that he uses to compare himself against others. Megalomaniacs and dictators often become obsessed with power, to the exclusion of all other considerations. Parkinson's Law

Parkinson's Law is one of the best known and the most important laws of money and wealth accumulation. It was developed by English writer C. Northcote Parkinson many years ago and it explains why most people retire poor.

The Way the Law Works

This law says that, no matter how much money people earn, they tend to spend the entire amount and a little bit more besides. Their expenses rise in lockstep with their earnings. Many people are earning today several times what they were earning at their first jobs. But somehow, they seem to need every single penny to maintain their current lifestyles. No matter how much they make, there never seems to be enough.

The Key to Financial Success

The first corollary of Parkinson's Law says: "Financial independence comes from violating Parkinson's Law."

Parkinson's Law explains the trap that most people fall into. This is the reason for debt, money worries and financial frustration. It is only when you develop sufficient willpower to resist the powerful urge to spend everything you make that you begin to accumulate money and move ahead of the crowd.

Slow Down Your Spending

The second corollary of Parkinson's Law is: "If you allow your expenses to increase at a slower rate than your earnings, and you save or invest the difference, you will become financially independent in your working lifetime."

This is the key. I call it the "wedge." If you can drive a wedge between your increasing earnings and the increasing costs of your lifestyle, and then save and invest the difference, you can continue to improve your lifestyle as you make more money. By consciously violating Parkinson's Law, you will eventually become financially independent.

Action Exercises

Here are three things you can do to apply this law immediately:

First, imagine that your financial life is like a failing company that you have taken over. Institute an immediate financial freeze. Halt all non-essential expenses. Draw up a budget of your fixed, unavoidable costs per month and resolve to limit your expenditures temporarily to these amounts.

Carefully examine every expense. Question it as though you were analyzing someone else's expenses. Look for ways to economize or cut back. Aim for a minimum of a 10 percent reduction in your living costs over the next three months.

Second, resolve to save and invest 50 percent of any increase you receive in your earnings from any source. Learn to live on the rest. This still leaves you the other 50 percent to do with as you desire. Do this for the rest of your career.

Getting Into The Game

Let's begin with the basics. Whether you are already operating a business, or you have just decided to start a new business, you must continually evaluate your current situation. Even if you are currently selling a product or service, you must recognize and accept that 80% or more of your products or services will be new or different in five years. As an exercise, imagine that you were starting over today. Is there anything that you are doing that, knowing what you now know, you wouldn't get into again today? Imagine that you have no limitations of time, money, experience or resources. If you could do or be anything in your business life, what would you choose?

Start With Yourself

Begin with your own talents, your own abilities, your experience, knowledge, interest, background, education and so on. Look carefully at your current work, your current business, your current position, or your current product or service. Look within your own life and work, under your own feet, for your own "acres of diamonds." What qualities do you have that account for your greatest success in life so far? What personal skills and abilities have gotten you to where you are today? How could you apply those same skills and abilities to starting and building a new business?

Customer Need

Many fortunes begin when an individual sees a customer need that is not being satisfied and which their current company has no interest or desire in satisfying. Sometimes this idea comes as the result of customer inquiries or complaints. Often, the individual decides that he will start a new business, sometimes on the side, to give these customers what they are asking for. Sometimes there is a great business opportunity staring you in the face, right where you are today. What could it be?

What Can You Improve Upon?

Look for something that is an improvement on an existing product or service rather than something brand new. Look for something that is cheaper or of better quality. Look for something that has additional features or functions that current products don't offer. Look for something that is better in some way in comparison to something that people are already buying and using. Improving an existing successful product or service is the fastest and surest way to build a successful business. An idea only needs to be 10% newer and better to capture substantial market share.

What Can You Get Excited About?

Look for a product or service about which you can really become enthusiastic. Sometimes people become wealthy by translating or transforming their hobbies into a business. You will always be most successful doing something or marketing something that you really love and care about. Every product or service, and business, must have a champion.

Make a list of your passions in life, then go down that list and look for something you may be able to turn into a profitable business.
